Unidentified Captain
80th Indiana Infantry

This unidentified officer of the 80th Indiana infantry sports the bushy side whiskers that many soldiers found fashionable during the Civil War. The whiskers, with the chin clean shaven, were known as sideburns or burnsides. The distinctive style garnered its name from Union Army general Ambrose Burnside. The Indiana captain's uniform includes a forage cap with a metallic thread embroidered infantry horn and regimental number and two captain's shoulder boards on his frock coat.
